The sports industry has a huge responsibility — and opportunity — to contribute positively to the climate crisis. While many organizations have started to take steps towards change, the industry is not moving fast enough. To hold ourselves, sponsors, and the entire sports industry accountable, 17 Sport collaborated with ChangeNOW to launch the Sport Sponsors Climate Pledge.

The goal of the pledge is simple: signatory companies commit to demanding certified carbon reduction objectives that are aligned with the Paris Agreement from sports events they wish to sponsor. This pledge leverages financial support in the sports industry to set goals that will reduce emissions in alignment with scientifically validated climate plans. The pledge uses the power of sponsorships to drive change and move the sports industry into a clear phase of greenhouse gas reduction.

We were proud to work with ChangeNOW on drafting this pledge to create real, lasting change within the industry. As part of the Sport for Change program at the 2023 ChangeNOW summit, the pledge was announced live with Accor, EDF, Orange, and Sodexo as the first signatories, along with a number of individual athlete supporters. Watch the video below to hear exclusive interviews with the first signatories, as well as why this pledge is so important to us at 17 Sport.
